These advanced control technologies can reduce the interaction required by the operator, increase the time of automatic control - including during the start-up and shutdown of most unit trips - and make the overall control system more capable of handling interfering conditions during the process and normal operation. There were a number of operational challenges before the /ASeries DCS were installed on the feedwater control in the Omaha Public Power District at Fort Calhoun Station. The controls are not well adjusted. During power changes, level disturbances are not uncommon and low level control is poor.
ohn Steinke, senior nuclear design engineer at the facility, said :" The use of split three-element control on the bypass feed valve and the main valve allows automatic control to handle the switch from the bypass to the main valve. This reduces the direct human interaction of the operator, thus reducing the challenges for the operator. We also rotated our steam generator feed pumps. Split range three-element control greatly reduces the disturbance associated with rotating these pumps. More precise adjustment and control maximizes the capacity factor (generating capacity) of our units while eliminating unnecessary burden on the licensed operators operating the system. So far, we have not tripped or gained additional downtime due to DCS.
